How to become a web developer.

For a successful career as a web developer you will need:

An interest in computers! As a web developer you will be responsible for building and maintaining websites, therefore it is essential that you have a passion for computing and programming. You’ll also need some knowledge of scripting languages (JavaScript, Perl, PHP, HTML, CSS etc). The successful web developer must possess strong communication skills as you will be originally discussing with clients what they want, and selling your services.

A creative mind is also key, as you will be looking to take a clients concept and turn it into a workable website – having said that, it’s also important to be able to follow instructions with attention to detail, as many clients will know exactly what they want and where! A committed work ethic, patience and a logical approach to problem solving are also good attributes to have, as you will often be working to deadlines, and may have several revisions to make before the client is satisfied.

The world of web development is in a constant state of flux as trends and technology change, therefore today’s web developer must be willing to keep her mouse on the pulse. As a web developer you also must be aware of any International web development standards.

Often you’ll be required to work within a team, so people skills are important – but the quality of your work should speak for itself.  Finally, examples of your work. If you are an unqualified web developer it is vital that you can show potential clients what you can do, take a bit of time (and possibly expense) in setting yourself up an online portfolio of sites showcasing your skills.

Training/qualifications

Although some clients looking for a web developer will require that you have some qualifications, it is more than possible to find online freelance work based on your experience alone. If you’re able to show a potential client your skills and ability, then that can be just as impressive, if not more so, than a qualification.

If you do not wish to study formally, it is key to have a sound working knowledge of one if not more of Perl, JavaScript, HTML, XML, CSS and Ajax (amongst others). Obviously the skills you require are going to be based on what type of jobs you wish to apply for. There are many online courses (fee based and free) out there, along with youtube tutorials – and practice makes perfect!

Should you wish to follow a more structured path to a web development career, then you would need to pursue further education in a subject such as web design or development, computer science, multimedia design or digital media development.

Hardware/software

Fairly straightforward. You will need a good laptop, a comfortable keyboard (you will be typing a lot!) and possibly a mouse. There isn’t really a standard list to go on, as it all depends on what you are comfortable with.

Where to find work online?

Online work as a web developer can be found on many sites which include, but are not limited to:

How much can I earn?

The earnings for a web developer are relevant to experience and the type of jobs you are applying for. The average web developer earns $60,000, with the bottom 10% making $30,000 and the top 10% over $100,000 per year.

These figures will obviously vary for the freelancer based on skills, training, experience and luck! It is possible though, dependent on the work you are willing to put in, to make a very healthy salary as a freelance developer.

How well does it suit the Digital Nomad Lifestyle?

Amazingly well! Whilst web development can be a time consuming profession, it is also one you can take around the world with you. Providing you have a decent laptop and a passport there is nothing stopping you.
