How to be a blogger!

For a successful blogging career you will need:

Good writing skills. For a blog to be successful and gain followers, your writing must be informative or entertaining – or ideally both! If you have specialist knowledge and can write with authority on a topic, consider setting up a blog around that subject and posting advice, tips and reviews.
As a digital nomad, you may choose to write about your lifestyle and travel adventures. There is already a strong community of digital nomad bloggers online so this is a pretty competitive area – but if you have a strong personal style and can offer a unique perspective there’s no reason why you can’t be successful. (With a lot of hard work!)

Hardware/software

A laptop – or possibly a tablet computer, or even just a decent smartphone with a lightweight external keyboard if you’re a real minimalist! A good laptop will probably serve you better though, as the work involved in becoming a successful blogger isn’t just writing posts. You’ll probably want to spend time accessing analytic services to track the progress of your blog, along with researching new posts, promoting your blog through various avenues, liasing with potential sponsors etc.

Where to find work online?

As a blogger, you make your own work! Initially you’ll need to focus on creating quality content for your blog, whether this is about your travels as a digital nomad or any other topic of your choice – then spend some time on SEO (search engine optimisation) to make sure people can find you. If your keywords are very popular this may be more difficult, but keep at it. (Or carefully choose niche keywords initially – but that’s a whole other topic!) You’ll also need to spend time promoting your blog through social media and content sites such as ezine articles and squidoo. Once you have a decent amount of readers, you can start making money!

The traditional ways of monetising a blog include adsense and other forms of PPC (pay per click) advertising, sponsered posts or reviews of products or experiences, relevant amazon product placement, affiliate product sales, or selling assets you yourself have created which could be ebooks, exclusive access to specialist content, access to online courses, forums or communities… The possibilities are endless!

How much can I earn?

How much you can earn as a digital nomad blogger really depends on how much work you put in – alongside a ton of other factors including how many people visit your blog, your google ranking, your social media following, the type of monetisation strategy you choose to employ.. As a general rule, expect to spend at least six months and probably far longer than that to make any kind of living from your blog – and it probably won’t make you a millionaire in any case.

How well does it suit the digital nomad lifestyle?

Really well – that’s why so many digital nomads blog! There are no qualifications required to get started and all you need is a working laptop. You work on your own schedule so you don’t have to worry about client deadlines when you’re busy surfing in Indonesia or munching tapas in Madrid.
